The next generation of job-seekers is entering the job market. The market may not be so kind to some who are first entering, but it doesn’t have to be. Certain things that you may not have known that can land you get the job you want

First thing’s first, don’t get discouraged. There are a lot of people who are looking for jobs right out of college. Certain mentalities may set in, “I’m going up against someone from an elite school.” or “I’m not good enough for this job.” These mentalities are something you need to avoid. You have to believe in yourself. You will never get the job unless you apply; it never hurts to hit submit on the application page. There will always be someone with a better resume, but that shouldn’t stop you from trying.

Second, do something worthwhile, even if it doesn’t pay. You may be unemployed for a while out of college. Getting an unpaid internship for a few months before you get a paid, full-time or part-time position is better than having a large gap in your resume. Volunteering also can help; volunteer for a cause you’re passionate about. You could even meet someone that can help you get your first job, which leads me to my next point.

Don’t forget about networking online and in-person. Social media can be a haven for job at times. If you know someone who works at a company that is looking for new employees, that could be your ticket. A Facebook status or Tweet could be your way to a job. In my case, this got me two jobs, yes, two jobs. One A.M. in the middle of June, I got a Facebook message from a friend of mine I played soccer with twice a week. He asked me if I wanted a writing position with a growing sports website, I gladly accepted it. Within two months, I got promoted to a Staff Writer. I didn’t get paid for it, but it greatly helped on my resume. The second position came on a discussion group on Facebook, and that got me my second writing gig. If I didn’t use social networking sites, my life would be in a different situation right now.

Networking in-person is a classic way of getting a job. The world is small; someone you know could know someone, who knows someone etc. They can get you a good job that may not even be available to the public. Talking to people, making connections, being friendly can get you very far in life.

The last and most important piece of all of this to do something you love to do. When you apply for a full-time position when you’re done with college, make sure you’re doing something you love. Revolving your life around something you utterly hate will bring you down not just in the workplace, but as a person too. Once you find something you love to do, keep getting into it. If you love something, do it. Passion is what will make you become a master of something, and you potentially can make a lot of money doing it. Don’t let anything hold you back.
